THROUGH THE LENS OF WISSEM NASRAOUI
Wissem Nasraoui, also known artistically as Abstruse, is a Tunisian artist specialising in photography and videography. In this gallery, we highlight Wissem’s remarkable contribution during the inaugural MELD event held on May 16, 2025.
Wissem’s technique of using flash combined with long shutter speeds creates a unique visual narrative. This method allows him to highlight specific features of his subjects while simultaneously obscuring details, inviting creative and thoughtful interpretations.
Each photograph weaves through light and shadow, compelling viewers to explore the contrast between clarity and ambiguity. The dynamic interplay of sharp illuminations juxtaposed with soft focus not only emphasises the transient nature of each moment but also encourages a deeper emotional engagement and a personal journey into the hidden experiences within the frame.
What draws you to an event like MELD, and how does it align with your creative vision as a photographer?
The moment I heard of MELD and learned more about the concept, I said this is my call, a place where artists from different categories gather all at one place to perform live, it was like a dream night for me. So I decided to join as a photographer, to capture the motions, the unspoken language that we connect with during a live performance.
How do you plan to approach photographing collaboration, capturing not just individuals, but the connections between artists, performers, and audience?
During artistic live events I love to capture raw moments, spontaneity, what’s between the performers and the audience, the body language which expresses the spiritual exchange between both artists and audience, this is why I don’t get to talk a lot during live performances to not mess with the people’s authenticity.
How do you see your work contributing to the memory of MELD as an evolving creative platform?
MELD as a creative platform is keen to bring up the best of artists, and that’s what happened to me during the first edition, it helped me to reconnect with my creative self, the vibes, the atmosphere, the selection of artists, all collectively has made me enjoy what I was doing and helped to portray the spirit of MELD, and of course I’m looking forward for more editions to come in the future.
